Laser Cleaning for Plastic, Rubber & Silicone Molds

Non-abrasive removal of plastic, rubber, silicone, mold-release residue, oxidation and carbonized buildup from molds, tooling and precision components.

  • Cleans plastic, rubber and silicone residue

  • No abrasive blasting media or harsh chemicals

  • Helps preserve detailed tooling surfaces and geometry

Overview

Molds and precision tooling used in plastic, rubber and silicone manufacturing require regular maintenance to support part quality, consistent venting and reliable production. Over time, tooling can accumulate resin, rubber, silicone, mold-release agents, oxidation and carbonized process residue.

Laser Blasting Pros uses controlled laser cleaning to selectively remove this buildup without abrasive media or aggressive chemical stripping. The process is well suited for mold cavities, vents, textured surfaces and detailed tooling features where surface condition and geometry matter.

Why Mold Cleaning Is Critical

Contamination buildup on molds and tooling can lead to several production problems, including:

• Part defects or surface imperfections
• Poor mold release performance
• Mold vent clogging
• Increased cycle times
• Reduced mold life

Regular cleaning helps maintain mold performance and prevents production interruptions caused by contamination buildup.

Laser cleaning allows manufacturers to restore mold surfaces without abrasive blasting, aggressive chemicals, or mechanical scraping methods.

What Laser Cleaning Removes

Laser cleaning can remove common mold and tooling contaminants, including:

  • Plastic and resin buildup

  • Burnt rubber and silicone residue

  • Carbonized process deposits

  • Mold-release agent residue

  • Oxidation and light surface corrosion

  • Oil, grease and other production contamination

Laser parameters are adjusted for the contaminant, mold material and surface condition. This controlled approach targets unwanted buildup while helping preserve mold cavities, vents, textured finishes and critical tooling geometry.

Benefits for Mold & Tooling Operations

Laser cleaning offers several advantages for plastic, rubber and silicone mold-maintenance operations:

  • Controlled, non-abrasive cleaning of tooling surfaces

  • No spent blasting media or aggressive chemical stripping

  • Access to vents, textured areas and detailed mold features

  • Cleaning in place when access and production conditions allow

  • Reduced unnecessary disassembly and maintenance downtime

  • Minimal secondary waste and cleanup

By selectively targeting production residue and surface contamination, laser cleaning can support consistent tooling maintenance while reducing the risks associated with scraping, abrasive blasting and harsh chemical processes.

Study on the Effect of Laser Cleaning on the Surface Quality of Composite Tooling Molds

A 2025 engineering study evaluated laser removal of cured mold-release residue from polished Q235B steel. Under carefully selected parameters, the researchers achieved near-complete residue removal and reduced measured surface roughness from 1.840 μm to 0.474 μm.

The study also demonstrated why correct parameter selection matters. Insufficient energy left contamination behind, while excessive heat caused localized melting, resolidification and increased surface roughness. Results involving hardness and wear resistance were specific to the tested steel, contamination and laser settings and should not be treated as guaranteed outcomes for every mold.

Complimentary Demonstrations for Mold Shops

Laser Blasting Pros offers complimentary on-site demonstrations for qualified plastic, rubber and silicone manufacturers, mold shops and tool-and-die operations evaluating industrial laser cleaning.

A demonstration allows your maintenance and tooling teams to observe the process on a representative mold, tool or production component and evaluate cleaning results before scheduling a larger service project.

This demonstration shows laser cleaning removing polymer residue and surface oxidation from an industrial rotational mold. The controlled, non-abrasive process targets buildup across rough and machined surfaces while helping preserve the mold’s original geometry and detailed tooling features.
